MIrror Gypsy King Election

IT was a first for Britain’s Roma gypsies when they crowned Ladislav Stojka as their king.

Chiefs in the past had to fight for the title, but Ladislav, 53, beat 18 others with a big fat load of votes.

The first election of its kind brought together more than 100 representatives from around 10 UK cities. Ladislav’s regalia included traditional “old sticks” – and the gold crown was placed on his head by Miss Roma 2011 Maria Kalinacoba, 17.

He was driven off in a BMW limo to celebrate after the election, in Peterborough town hall, Cambs.

Organiser Roman Cicko said after Saturday’s event: “The new king will encourage education. We’re trying to bring Britain’s gypsies together.”

Norman Foster's iconic first public building, inspired by Zeppelin Airship Hangers is reopening tomorrow (21st May 2006) after a large programme of expansion.

The Centre, which first opened in 1978, was built to house the Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Collection of world art, which the couple donated to the University in 1973.

Since 1978 the Sainsbury Centre has grown to meet the changing needs of museum goers, academics and students.

It was expanded in 1991 when the Crescent Wing was added, improving facilities for displaying and caring for art and providing space for new teaching and research activities. Both the Crescent Wing extension and the new building link project have been responses to the evolution of thinking in museum use.
