UK based documentary makers, Darlow Smithson Productions have released their latest film, Hawking.
Whilst there have been many attempts to portray Professor Hawking’s extraordinary life, this is the first time his story has been told in his own words.
As part of the production I spent a day with Hawking and his staff at Cambridge University shooting stills for the film’s publicity. An assignment that came with it’s own peculiarities due to the unique nature of the subject, the shot list and pouring rain! Despite these small obstacles, it proved to be one of the most enjoyable days of my career.
After shooting what was needed for the film itself I set about trying to capture a little of Hawking’s day to day life. There was a juxtaposition if the hustle and bustle of his medical carers, against the serenity of having a conversation with Hawking himself; it takes quite a while for him to type out answers in real time.
One who has seen it all before and I’d imagine isn’t surprised by anything is Hawking’s long standing assistant, Judith Croasdell And with a glint in her eye, showing everything about their long standing relationship my favourite from the day was a portrait of the two of them together.
